Getting qualification in Special Education?

Hi,
I am new here so please don’t judge if anything is wrong :)
I am hoping that there might be someone who could possibly give me some advice
I am currently looking to get back into styding, and would like to eventually be come a special educational needs teacher, so at the moment I am looking for someone who already has the qualification / position

-what did your journey look like? Uni degree plus extra courses? Or Apprenticeship?

  • what was the most challenging part of the journey?

The reason I have decided to go onto getting qualification in that field is because of my son who is very likely autistic, we have not got him diagnosed yet as it is a long process and he is still under 2, but I have no doubt we will get the diagnosis, I knew it from early days and unfortunately as the time passed I know it is the case, but this is all new to me and even though I am researching all the techniques I am lacking a lot of knowledge. Of course after going through everything first hand it impacted my life in many ways, when he was born I always thought I am going back to uni to do business management, but now with everything going on I decided to choose a different path that would be more suitable for me and my family.
Sorry for the essay, any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Many thanks

Hi

Have you got a degree already? If you want to be an SEN teacher I think you go through the usual routes to QTS.

Could you get some classroom experience first as an LSA in a special school? I wouldn't recommend getting into teaching unless you've got the time and headspace to do so.

I'm a SENCO and my SEN teachers don't have SEN qualifications necessarily, but are qualified and experienced teachers. I did the SENCO award and am just finishing my masters in SEN. The Autism Education part of the programme was the best bit and so enlightening about Autism. For understanding the history of Autism, neurotribes by Steve Silbermann is a very good starting point.
