My ds is 6 he has a ehcp and full time one to one. Previous years iv had no complaint with school, lots of meetings/feedback they have keep me in the loop. This year we have not had a Sen meeting at all, the last one was June 21. His targets will need updating but this doesn't seem to be being done. The only meeting I've had was a transition meeting in Dec for transition to junior school which was with me, new senco and a Sen officer from la no review took place. Head has said there will be a meeting this term for his ehcp annual review. I thought Sen meetings were supposed to take place every term? She seems to be saying because other meetings are happening sen meetings don't need to go ahead. Anyone know if this is true?

EHCP AR legally only have to take place once a year. Many schools hold termly interim reviews but they aren’t statutory and the school don’t have to unless such provision is in section F.

If DS is in an infant school now and will move to a junior school (as opposed to moving from infants to junior within the same school) the amended EHCP must be finalised by 15th Feb and I presume the transition meeting in Dec was the phase transfer review following which the EHCP can be amended, so I am confused where you posted ”no review took place”. An AR doesn’t need to be held this term.

@Imitatingdory
Thanks Ok fair enough in nursery, reception (aside from first lockdown ) and year 1 we had termly Sen plan reviews with teacher, senco, myself , one to one and acsets. We would go through his targets and update them accordingly. I assumed this was standard.
Senco left last July and it's been a bit of a shit show since. But if legally they only have to update sen plan once a year then I guess I have to accept it. It just seems ridiculous that his targets are only being reviewed once in a school year when obviously he develops all the time. It's also rubbish for his one to one as she is new to post and role and only has targets that are 8 month old to go on.

The ehcp is being updated currently and it's annual review should take place this term. That has always been yearly it's his Sen plan that was updated termly.

^ This is the wrong way round. The AR meeting should be held and following that the EHCP should be amended, or kept the same.

If DS is moving from an infant school to a junior school there should have been a phase transfer review last term. If the Dec meeting wasn’t this you need to complain to the LA.

Most schools do have termly assess, plan, do review meetings to update DC’s IEP, but unlike EHCPs IEPs are not statutory, so you can’t force them to unless it in section F. If the school haven’t got a SENCO I can see why there may be delays, although that doesn’t make it best practice.

@Imitatingdory thank you that makes sense. I asked about where the changes to ehcp had come from as usually it's done on a meeting. Head said it's taken from what was said at transition meeting but everything said at that meeting was in relation to transition not overall. There's a trainee senco but she has no experience.

I will bring up Sen plan meetings see if we can add them to the ehcp. It's worth a try. I like to be involved in my sons education.

So the transition meeting in Dec was a phase transfer review, i.e. like an AR but held at an appropriate time for a phase transfer, in this case in the autumn term of Y2, it should cover all amendments that are needed. If you aren’t happy with the finalised EHCP you can appeal. I would be extremely surprised if another AR was held this term when the EHCP from the phase transfer review doesn’t have to be finalised until 15th Feb, half way through this term.

The trainee SENCO is probably actually the SENCO. SENCOs can be in post up to 3 years without actually having the NASENCO.
