Hi All,

My DC1, soon to be 2 years old, was a bit speech delayed forever but she is now starting to gain new words. She is not yet at the stage of combining words together.

My worry is that all of the words are one-syllable words like car, more, up, shoe etc.

Or she would only say the first syllable of longer words like da for dinosaur, ca for carrot, mi for milk, poo for spoon, ba for bus etc.

She has gained around 40 words and all of them are like this.

Strangers wouldn't be able to understand what she means when she says these words...

Sometimes I am even puzzled because for example she uses the same sound for many words. For example ba is ball and bus, ca is car and cat etc.

Is this all normal and just a stage or is it an indication of a bigger issue that a speech therapist would help her sort this out?

In all other areas she is developing well and her understanding/receptive language is where it should be for her age.

It's only the expressive language that worries me...

If you are concerned best thing is to get a professional to see her. She must be close to 2 year review from health visitor. You could ring to discuss concerns they may come out earlier. Also you could request speech and language therapy, if there are neurological concerns ie autism they should pick up on it and if not they can support her speech development. There's an online assessment tool called mchat for toddlers where you can see how she scores for autism. Obviously it's not diagnostic but can help clarify things. If you are feeling it may be autism or similar your health visitor can request a paediatrician appointment. The process varies from area to area but your hv should know what it is.

Sorry posted too soon!! If it is just speech then yes some speech therapy would definitely help. Also is she at nursery if yes have you spoken to them?

@kmmxt1 Hello, my daughter now is 26months and is talking in two word simple phrases like “mum up”, “dad there” , “car go”, “more juice” etc. and has more than 100 words. However, she still avoids 3-syllable words. She can only go up to 2-syllable words. For example she can say “sti-cker” but not “ba-na-na”.

Her speech is not very clear, we don’t already understand what she says but there has been a massive improvement the last 4 months!

We had a few speech therapy sessions which helped us to understand how is best to talk to her in order to reach her full potential. Sometimes we manage to follow the advice, others we simply can’t!

How is your kid doing?
