My son is 10 years old . He has autism , adhd and extremely severe challenging behaviours . He is 2:1 at all times other than with me ( I’m a single parent ) . He pulls out clumps of my hair , bites and pushes me around . He is the same at school ( SEN school ) . He can also be lovely but the impulsivity means he can flick like a switch. I’ve been asked to consider residential for a while now by professionals but now am considering it . It breaks me thinking about it . He is also unpredictable in public places which causes problems .

Consider it and go and see some. It could change your relationship for the better and it’s quite hard for the LA and everyone around you in authority to suggest residential if they don’t think it maybe a good option. Your son will only get bigger. Have a look around and then make up your mind. I’ve heard from parents it’s been the best thing for their family and sanity.

I agree . For one thing, you sound as though you are on your knees and you can't go on like this.

More importantly, though, I have heard children like your son thrive and are happy in residential placements because there is so much routine, and because their needs are met far better than they ever can be in the home environment, no matter how loving or dedicated the parents.

And it doesn't mean he goes away for ever. He can still come home for a weekend and you can still visit.

Go and see some residential schools. You'll know when you find the right place.
