Concerns About Secondary Education - SEN

DS, year 4 is awaiting an assessment for dyslexia/possible ADHD. SENCO at primary school look like they will do what they can to accommodate his additional needs.

My concern is about what is going to happen when he goes to secondary school. Large class sizes in the local comp...plus will they cater for ds's needs?

Private education would be a stretch. I am a sahm for 3 dc (two of whom have SEN, third dc young). In addition I have mental health issues (but unable to claim PIP as not deemed limiting enough). Working full-time would be a stretch for me. Working part-time would be possible but would not cover fees. The whole point of me wanting to be a sahm is to be there for my dc (especially in light of SEN) I feel damned if I do and damned if I don't.

I want dc to have as positive experience as possible and honestly unsure of how to proceed.

Anyone?

Do you think an EHCP is necessary? All schools must make 'best endeavours' to meet the needs of pupils with SEND. Speaking to the secondary schools' SENCOs is helpful is finding out the schools' attitudes. If DS's needs can not be met within the normal resources of schools you can apply for an EHCP.

Thank you for responding Imitatingdory. Can I ask what an EHCP is?

First of all I need to get a diagnosis. Collating information to put toward assessment from school etc.

You don't need a diagnosis for support in school, including EHCPs. An EHCP is a statutory document that sets out a child's needs and what provision they require to meet those needs. EHCPs are only for England. IPSEA and SOSSEN have lots of useful information online about them. Scotland, Wales and NI have similar documents and charities. If you are in one of those let me know and I'll point you in the right direction.

As PP said, you don't need a diagnosis. It is about identifying your child's needs and the provision that is required to meet those needs.
