After verbal diagnosis, how long did it take for paediatrician to send written confirmation of child’s difficulties?

Had an appointment for DC 3 weeks ago and paediatrician said DC has a neurological disorder and they would send out the report etc… I’m anxious as I want to see what it says as I have a feeling this could help what support DC gets at school.

It was a straightforward diagnosis as they had previously been assessed and everything pointed towards a diagnosis.

I’m waiting for post every day, wondering if it’s got lost in the post?!

Is it normal to wait this long? I assumed I’d have it the week later.

In my experience, a 3-4 week wait is normal to wait for a consultant's report.

My DS was diagnosed with autism by a hospital consultant and her team. I think it was at least 4 weeks before the full report came. A consultant will set aside a set period of time to dictate their detailed reports to their secretary who will then type it up, send it back to them for checking and then it will go out (maybe second class to save money).

When the report did come though, it was very detailed and thorough. It was over 20 pages!

If you've still not heard anything after four weeks, I think it's reasonable for you to contact the consultant's secretary. When you do get the report, you will/should be given the opportunity to then contact them if there's anything in it you don't understand - or would like to discuss.

With my DS's report, I asked for some of the wording to be tightened up which talked about the difficulties he was having at school and they were happy to do that.

Thanks so much for your reply. I’ve just seen it now. I really appreciate it, as it’s made me feel better, as the 4 week period isn’t up yet.

I’ll hang fire until at least then.

Support in school should be needs led, not based on a diagnosis.
