SENCO at school

Hi

My DD 12 is in the process of being diagnosed with ADS and possibly ADHD. I got an email today from Senco saying that she is not participating in her lessons. My DD did not do the activities in one lesson and in the second one she left to go to her agreed special place. The reason I am very sad is that no suggestion and no help from them…Just telling us they are concerned. We are doing everything we can, all the diagnosis privately as quickly as we can. What else can we do? Am I right in feeling let down that no suggestions and no real intention to understand the circumstances that pushed my DD to act? I am slowly understanding what happened to push her to leave the lesson but still not got to the bottom of the issue. Thanks for any replies.

I would bounce it back to school. What in particular did she struggle with, were there any sensory triggers, did she understand what was expected of her, have they followed any existing plan? If not, suggest a meeting to find out. School should have many strategies to manage most things.

Absolutely, why did she refuse to do the work and what needs to change so that she can? Are they keeping an ABC chart for her? If not, suggest they start one. Sorry for the "challenging behaviour" in the title - this is for children who are not coping, however that manifests.

So school is concerned...

Right, so what are they going to do about it?

Definitely go back to the school. When there were issues with my DS at school I would always ask the teacher what had happened before the incident. Grateful to learn of the ABC approach, will be referring to this in future correspondence.
