Timescale for ADHD diagnosis

When DS was 7 or 8 we paid for a private test where he was found to be borderline for ADHD. He was over achieving in school despite being unable to sit still, looking around, getting over anxious and generally showing signs of ADHD. Because he was doing well with the school work we didn't follow it up.
Sadly now in secondary (he's 12) he is now struggling. He has told me he wants to try medication. I have support from his school who agree he is struggling due to suspected ADHD.
I called the GP last December to get him re tested and he is on a waiting list - they have told me they expect to see him in December of 2021 (4 months from now).

Does anyone have any experience of how quickly it will move once he has been seen in December? This will be his initial appointment, so I imagine further appointments for the testing. Our worst nightmare is that this could be another year!
Please could anyone give me an idea of the time scale?

It will take a very long time. Also, have you considered ASD? My DD was assessed for ADHD ended up getting diagnosed ASD 6 years later. If you can afford to get private assessments I'd do it. Either way, look into ADHD & ASD strategies to see how you can change your DC's environment to best support their needs. Good luck. Flowers
