Moving to UK with ADHD child

My family are suddenly having to move back to the UK with a newly diagnosed ADHD boy (11) and his older sister. It's a minefield having to re-enter the UK education system and wondered if anyone has any advice. I understand that we've obviously missed the normal admissions process and was going to start calling around state schools in the area where our UK house is to see if we can get him and his sister in, but with only a letter from a psychologist who diagnosed him here, I'm not sure we're going to get any additional support for him. Has anyone been in this position and do you have any advice? Can't afford private.

Which part of the UK? The school system is different in each country?

When is DS 12?

What year will DD be going in to? This could be your bigger problem if the school have already start GCSEs.

He's 12 in August.
Thanks I managed to submit admissions forms to a couple of schools, one looks promising as they have a space for my son ans tentative for my daughter, she is in year 8 so thankfully still not yet doing GCSE. I guess I'll have to start going down the SEN route when we arrive as I doubt the CAMHS info from my current country will be valid.

If DS is 12 in August he will be in Y8 in September, which is easier than if he was a month younger and you had transition to secondary to contend with too.

Since DD will be going in to Y9 in September, be aware some school begin GCSEs in Y9. If the school you want doesn't have a place for DD you can appeal.

All schools have to make best endeavours to meet a child's needs, although some are better than others. Being diagnosed abroad shouldn't matter for support in school as support should be needs based, rather than diagnosis led.

Where a child's needs can not be met with resources normally available in mainstream schools you can apply for an EHCP. If the school need more money in order to meet DS' needs whilst applying for an EHCP they can apply for high needs top up funding.

If DS is medicated that is when you will need a referral to CAMHS.

Just a thought here, not all areas put adhd under CAMHS, when you register with your GP take a copy of his diagnosis and current prescription

In our area he would then be put forward for the monthly meeting of community paeds, camhs, and adhd team who would then decide where best to place him

As he is already presumably medicated they should slot him in to their service and see quickly so that his medication prescription can continue under shared care with the GP practice
