Does anyone have experience of these? Does the child need an EHCP to get a place? How do they decide who gets a place?

Our son has just had an ASD diagnosis aged 9 but he is high functioning and pretty academic. We are wondering if this might be an option, a few schools in our county have them. Ought we to be seeking an EHCP for him? I can’t imagine he’d qualify for any funding as his state primary have been managing his needs so far without any.

The doctor said he’d have been diagnosed with Aspergers in the past, and that he expects he’ll need limited support, mainly around transitions. Any advice welcome.

Yes, they require an EHCP. Places are allocated depending on need. You have nothing to lose by applying for an EHCNA, but, from your post, realistically it will be difficult if DS' needs are being met. Even with an EHCP, if DS is coping in mainstream you will have a fight for an ARP place.
