Medikinet for possible ADHD

Hi,
My dd (7) has shown signs of ADHD for some time now and is really struggling at school with her distractibility and inability to concentrate/focus for any length of time. She talks non stop from waking to falling asleep and is struggling with her peers as she doesn’t seem to understand social interaction just talks at the other kids.

She did a QB test that was inconclusive so has been prescribed Medikinet with the view that if it helps she has ADHD and if it doesn’t, she doesn’t.

I tried them with her in February but she turned into an emotional wreck and so I stopped them as wasn’t sure whether the emotions came from the medicine or situation and she’s now started them again now she’s back in school.

Teacher has reported no difference in her concentration etc after a week. The emotional breakdowns are back. Should I persevere for longer, or do I just take her back off them? She can’t spend lots of time in tears and all over the place with her emotions but I also don’t want to stop them too soon if they might just take a while to start working? Paediatrician appt was back in Jan and won’t have another catch up for months I don’t expect so not sure what to do.

Any advice re stopping/continuing with the meds would be great, thanks

Can you not speak to doctor? What dose is she on? We started (today) giving it to our just 6 year old DS - and if it doesn’t help, doctor has told us to increase to a full capsule and if no change to call him and we can discuss whether to increase to 1.5 capsules. It may be the dose isn’t right.

Am v worried about side effects...

When we tried Equazim and we had awful meltdowns around 5-6pm.
We swit hed to Medikinet and went slowly from 5mg to 10, 15, 20 and now 30mg and it works better.
Better experience in school.
Try to takk to your doctor, you may have to try a few different meds before finding the right one.
Also melatonine really helps in the evening for sleeping
Good luck

Adhd is caused by the body under producing stimulant. It’s a physical condition, not a mental one. If you plug this gap with stimulant, the person becomes calmer and more focussed basically instantly.

If the medicine doesn’t have this impact, then the adhd diagnosis isn’t right and there’s another cause for the hyperactivity.

This doesn’t really help you as it could be so many things causing the behaviour, but if the meds don’t work then i’d say stop them x

Thanks everyone.

I think that’s what the doctor was trying to say @NinaManiana about it being used to decide on a diagnosis so I guess we’re back to the drawing board and it isn’t ADHD just looks very much like it. Have taken her off the Medikinet for now, at least the emotional breakdowns have stopped again and she seems far more ‘stable’. I’m not sure how I would even talk to the paediatrician- we pretty much get a phone appointment once a year and I have to wait for an appt letter confirming it - when I’ve tried to get earlier appointments in the past the hospital have just said I have to wait as he’s so busy. Thanks though!
