I have a DD year 5. School suspect ASD. Definite severe social anxiety but not much else I can see. Academically behind always has been or just hitting target but struggles with school work daily. Lunch club has been promised for her year group but never happens. School lie about this but need there help so only so many times I can pull them up on this as nothing changes. Year group has problems which don't help at all but can't change school until year 7 because of catchment ( long story) Apparently school is starting assessment/referall in September. She is very high functioning but has problems daily from anxiety. If very high functioning is the right term probably very easily overlooked is a better term. Suffers internally so not one of schools big problems. I have got cahms awaiting first appointment. Will this help speed up diagnosis/help. Headteacher has said she won't get a special school/ ehcp as she has much more affected children in the school that can't get help. So what else can I do wise mumsnetters? What does cahms do? I know she definitely has social anxiety but has had anxiety since starting school. Worse now older as life is harder, school work, friendships. Does hit herself about twice a week when fustrated and school has been told has stabbed a compass into herself multiple times at school. She does have a ta for a group of about seven children. Unfortunately these children that need help make bad choices in regards to behaviour whereas she actually does better around bright well behaved children. Almost helpers shall we say. But due to her academic ability she isn't sat ever with children like that at school. Hates school. It ruins her life. Have tried to home educate for a year but it didn't work as she not only can't learn but hates to learn. So this only made her hate home life.

Looking for any info in regards to what I can do to access help for her quicker/ or a diagnosis quicker. I want a echp plan can I apply for this myself? Should I wait for cahms to act? She hates to talk to people/ school staff and I don't feel they will tell me when all this is happening which worries me. Does cahms ever speak to the child at school without my permission? I don't mind them doing it but would like to be present as I make her feel safe. Hates to talk to people as that just triggers the social anxiety. Hard when schools lack communication and as a parent I'm trying to tell her what will happen in her day to calm her anxiety.

Yes you can apply for an EHC Needs assessment yourself. Don't listen to what the HT says. Hmm

Information here:

Use the model letter on the link.

Also if you are having trouble getting help from CAMHS you could try contacting Youngminds, the children’s mental health charity - youngminds.org.uk/

They have lots of resources on their website and also run a helpline for parents.

@Ellie56 Thank you. For the ehc plan does the local authority go alot in what the school says. I just feel it's downplayed alot. She was off again today 60 percent attendance. No phone call, headteacher too busy to talk to her whilst I stand outside the school not able to get her to go in, no work provided for days like these. At least 2/5 a week this happens. Rinse and repeat.

It doesn't matter what the school says. The bottom line is your daughter only has 60% attendance.

You need to apply for the EHCNA yourself, detailing the high anxiety, the self harming and school refusal, using the model letter referred to above.

If your child is unable to attend school, under Section 19 of the Education Act 1996, the LA has a legal duty to secure suitable, full-time alternative education for her.

Details of how to get temporary education put in place may be found here:
