Please could someone help me compile a list of the top, most amazing SEN schools for an 8 year old boy. (ASD/adhd) Day and boarding preferably. Some challenging behaviour, not cognitively delayed but behind academically because of lack of engagement.

In London currently but will move for the right school. If in Yorkshire even better!

My knowledge is out of date but you could look up Breckenborough near Thirsk as it used to have a good reputation and we liked it when we saw it several years ago.

Thank you. I’ll have a look. Is it an ASD provision do you know? Hard to tell from the website.

Have a look at some of NAS, Priory and Witherslack's schools. Also Alderwasley Hall. I have heard good things about Wilds Lodge too - it is a SEMH school but the majority of pupils have ASD.

Breckenbrough would be a good choice but DS is a little young at the moment, again most pupils have ASD but they do accept some without.

Does DS have an EHCP? Many SS don't allow parent to self fund. If you move with an EHCP the new LA will review the EHCP and there is the possibility they will amend or cease to maintain.

Yes he has an EHCP and is currently at a SN independent day school. Just perhaps not the right one. Thanks for your suggestions. I have heard bad things about Witherslack’s offerings. Robert Ogden seems (NAS) seems to have some positive feedback but hard to know what it’s like or what type of child or suits best because you can’t visit..

Be aware if you move, LA's can and do review EHCPs.

I think some Witherslack schools are better than others - have a look at Cedar House and Chilworth House.

In Yorkshire there is also Brantwood School.

Thank you. Yes - I know it’s a risk moving, but London life isn’t ideal and so perhaps it’s worth it?!

Hi,
Are you looking for an SEN specialist school? Or would you look at one with a specialist unit? If so I'd have a look at Ackworth School, in Yorkshire. It has an autism resource, so specialist staff and knowledge, but it gives the flexibility for a bit more of a 'mainstream' experience too.
I can totally relate to wanting the Yorkshire life - I'm making the move myself :)
