Hello.

My son is in year 2, he is a summer baby so the second youngest in his class. He is 6. Yesterday his teacher said to me, that he wants to refer my son to sen as son is lacking confidence is learning. He is not lacking confidence with friends but learning he is. He is on target with mats but not with writing and phonics. Teachers did say he does not think son has any education needs but just mayb confidence is problem. Son is very confident at home, knows his phonics when we had to do covid home school we have video of son doing all phonics with no mistake. So this was a big shock.
Just want to know what happens from here ?

. He did say my son was slowly showing more confidence but is still behind. Do you think sen can help? And will they agree to take son. Or do you think he does not need sen? We personally do not think he needs sen as at home does this all, has social confidence, but maybe he is a little shy of new teacher and just taking time to come out of his shell. We did say to teacher we are happy for him to mention our boy to sen if he thinks it will help!
Thank you everyone.

I'd be delighted that the school might be prepared to offer him a little bit of extra support to boost his confidence.

What each school can offer varies hugely. Schools use their money in different ways, and schools are funded differently in different authorities. If the school has the capacity to give him a little boost now, that could make all the difference.

The SENCo is just another teacher in the school, who co-ordinates the provision for anyone who is struggling for a bit. Some dc need support thoughout their lives. Some have quite significant needs. Some have diagnosed conditions. However, many will get some support and no longer need support after that particular package of intervention.

As to 'what happens' - it will depend on the outcome of the discussion. The SENCO might just offer some strategies, or suggestions for the teacher to try with him.
or
he might be included in a little group for some work on a regular basis for a while. It might be around communication and confidence skills more than phonics. Or it might be some pre-learning so he is prepared at lesson time and has the confidence to contribute. Or it might be a little bit more work on various literacy skills, to reinforce what he is doing in class.
There are lots of things a school can do, but it will depend on staffing.

Consider it a really positive thing that the school are offering him a boost, and ask them to keep in touch about what they are doing to support him.
