Please I need some advice on what to do, I am soo frustrated. My DD1 is in year 2 and gets full time 1 to 1 ehcp .She is well behaved at home but we get a lot of complaints from school. She keeps leaving the class, refuses to do her task, shouts out during class. It is gotten really bad since the lockdown. Previously she only leaves the class after she has completed her work but since she went back to school after the lockdown she now doesn't complete any academic work. I got her a wobble cushion to sit in class. This helped for a couple of days. She is very bright and intelligent. I do 45 mins of academic work with her everyday when she gets home from school to help catch up for any missed lessons. She is very cooperative when we do her work together. The school has now summoned me for a meeting regarding her behaviour in school. She says she doesn't like school and wants to play at home. Please I need your advice on what steps can be take to encourage her to stay in class. I am desperate please

Hi sorry you don't seem to have had any replies.
When is the meeting? I would try not to see it as being summonsed but trying to get the school to understand and be able to help with this reasons for your daughter's behaviours.
There must be a reason why she is feeling this way and school need to get to the bottom of it with your help. Good luck 🤞

It doesn't sound like DD's EHCP is meeting her needs. Do you think a reassessment of needs or early review is necessary?

Can DD communicate what it is about school she doesn't like?

Has DD had a sensory OT assessment and is OT in her EHCP? Does she have ear defenders, sensory breaks etc.

Thank you Maximumme,
She says she doesn't like school.

Thank you for your response 10brokengreenbottles. DD is currently not under OT and she has not had a sensory OT assessment. I spoke about this with the headteacher but he said due to lockdown restrictions it will be difficult to get anyone in. She doesn't have sensory breaks or use ear defenders. I recently got her a wobble cushion as I read somewhere that this may help. Do you think I should request for an early review of her ehcp. Will this be done through the key person at the LA or via the headteacher. Previous reviews was done via the headteacher. The school have talked about getting Ed psych to review her but not sure when this will take place.
Do you think I should get her ear defenders for noise control?.
Its a really difficult situation to be in.
She only says she doesn't like school but doesn't give reasons. She happily does academic at home for maximum of 60 min, I use the CGP books but she refuses to do any work in school. Her behaviour is getting worse and it has become a daily occurrence.

I would request a reassessment of needs. You could ask for an early review instead, but a) I think DD needs updated assessments - OT and EP at least, b) if the LA refuse there's no right of appeal. IPSEA have model letters for both you can send to the LA.

Has DD had a SALT assessment and is SALT in her EHCP? What about emotional literacy support?

Ear defenders and sensory movement breaks are well worth trying. Also think about placement within the classroom - front/back/side/own table/facing front, whatever works for DD. How's DD's writing? Can she write things down instead of shouting out. Can you gently probe what it is specifically she doesn't like.

ECHP review.
Next time school raise an issue, ask to review.
When your dd is calm and in a good place ask her.

Some times my child surprises me with the most obvious advice that no one thought of, not even me.
Many many children are suffering atm. Give her time but you are her advocate. I have to defend my child constantly because not all staff can bring themselves to a child’s POV they except children to grow up. Well hang on... how about you, the adult, get down to their level.
Not you of course. I mean school can be overwhelming
