If you live near Walton on Thames in Surrey and have a child with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, where do they go to school? What are the best options, state or private. We are about to start applying for an EHCP. Child is working 2-3 years behind peers. Feeling very stressed.

Three Rivers
Esher High
Thamesmead
Cobham Free School
Salesians Chertsey- we're not catholic but think school has a SEN unit
Hinchley Wood

Moon Hall Reigate

Hi, have you considered a specialist school instead of a main stream one?

Secondary school SEN funding is very limited and unless you have an EHCP already, the school is not obliged to offer you any support. Some schools will, but this is minimal for the complexity of needs you are listing and where your child is academically.

It does sounds as a specialist centre might be a good option for your child.

Please be aware that unless you have a SEN solicitor, the process will take around a year and half and although your child seems to have a number of SEN, you haven't mentioned any self care or medical/health needs, which you will need in order to meet the EHCP triangle.

Three River's has an amazing caring SENCo, and they do go far and beyond to help the students.

Esher High, is not best known for their SENCo provision without an EHCP

Thamesmead - sorry, I have no knowledge of this one

Cobham Free School - Has too many SEN children in their register, so I would imagine their resources outside their EHCP funding is very limited..

Salesisan and HInchely Wood, they both have a SEN unity, if your current primary school is supportive, I would get the SENCo to liaise with them and see if they can help you visit and make a decision if this is the best way forward.

Once again, please be very aware that the level of support a SEN child receives, I would imagine your child is now tier 1 with possible several SEN codes attached, in a secondary school decreases lots without an EHCP attached.

Best on your way forward

Kingswood House in Epsom. School bus from Esher. It’s currently all boys but becoming co/Ed in September 2021.

Interesting reading. There don't seem to be any specialist units in the area that I know of. Hopefully our child will have an EHCP in place by the time we apply for secondary places. They are a popular child, sporty, likes school and we don't want that enthusiasm to change. Just so hard to know what to do for the best when there isn't an obvious best choice school.

@Lioncountry, Three Rivers has a specialist area, mainly an ASD and last I heard, not linked to the school.

Hinckley Wood and Salesian, both have a specialist centre. I don't know about Salesian, but HW is attached to the school.

However, be aware that specialist centres have a minimal number of children, so unless your senco supports a possible review for them to consider your child for a placement, without an EHCP is going to be very hard to get one, it your current senco should be the best person to support this possibility, school to school.

Sorry, meant to say that 3 Rivers has a specialist centre but is not attached to the school.
