SEN Register

My child’s teacher has asked if they can put him in the SEN register so they can monitor him and get him any support he needs.
Background- he is adopted and during lockdown schooling he has been placed in the additionally resources mainstream unit as he was struggling with coping in the reception environment. When schools were normal he was only attending sessions in this class and was in reception class the majority of the time.
The school have not told us exactly why he needs to go on the register. I would like to know some more information, but I know schools are really stretched right now.
I have no issue with him being on the register.
I would really like to know:
Why specifically he is going on the register.
What support they believe he will benefit from.
What behaviours he is displaying at school that he may not be displaying at home.
What support they are currently giving him.
Do any of the staff have experience of children who have experienced FAS and Neonatal abstinence syndrome?
Is there anything else you would ask? Am I being ridiculous bothering them at this time?

You aren't being ridiculous at all. Speak with the SENCO as well as the class teacher. Ask via email so you have their answers in writing.

In addition to your questions I would ask:
-Will you support an EHCNA application? You should apply for one even if the answer is no.
-If you don't already know, how is PP+ being used to support DS?
-If you don't already know, who is the designated teacher for (P)LAC? Your question about experience and training would be better directed to them than the class teacher or SENCO (if they aren't the same person).
-What can we do at home to further support DS?

Thank you very much for your response. Is an EHCNA similar to a EHCP?
I have asked about PP+ and also the designated teacher for LAC. I was told that the PP+ goes towards more staff generally and the LAC role is shared between three teachers including the head who do different parts of the role.
I really appreciate you taking the time to answer. I am finding lockdown is really frustrating for this sort of thing which would have been so much better conducted face to face.

An EHCNA is the needs assessment stage prior to the LA deciding whether to issue an EHCP. Have a read of IPSEA and SOSSEN's websites.

PP+ is ring fenced for the (P)LAC cohort so I'm a little concerned it is being used for general staffing costs.

I would also be concerned how 3 teachers sharing the designated teacher role effects the effective communication with parents and carers and social workers etc.

Even if you do discuss matters face to face or on the phone it is a good idea to follow up with an email so you have written evidence should you ever require it.

Thank you for the extra information. I have been emailing following every conversation so I have a written record of what is going on.
