Putting DC on SEN register

School has said they'd like to put my DS on the SEND register at school. I'm fine with this as it means he should then get support when/where he needs it.

But I know nothing about how they decide what he needs after going on the register. Can anyone shed any light on this for me please?

Having worked in a few, it varies really from school to school. Some schools will add children with a diagnosis, some of the child has accessed external professionals, some if the child needs additional interventions. As you say it’s not a bad thing and will mean your child is being monitored carefully and getting any additional support they may need. But criteria wise you would probably have to ask the school

They will need to identify specific needs, and then set targets, along with a plan as to how they are going to help him reach those targets. the targets should then be reviewed 'regularly' (generally termly) to see how much progress he is making.
You should be aware of what the targets are. I obviously don't know what the needs are, but sometimes parents and school work on the same targets or use the same strategies to help a child, but, more commonly, the targets are just worked on at school.

It is sort of the other way round - they don't decide what he needs after going on the register, it is more that, because they have identified a need, and decided what they are going to put into place to support that need, that automatically means he is part of their list of children with an additional need.

Oh sorry I misread your post. I thought you were asking how he got put on.
@BackforGood is right, the support won’t bE decided now, it will have been before
