Do schools have to take into account SEN

DS has been diagnosed with a problem where he finds it hard to read and comprehend quickly enough to keep up. He is in year 11 at a private school.

Will he get any special treatment when applying to sixth form at a fee paying school or is there a risk he will be discriminated against.

He's done really well so far to mask the extent of his problems and it's been hard to get him help, which is one of the reasons we moved him from his state school. He's on target to get 6:7s and a couple of 8s in GCSEs and I'm worried he won't get in on the back of his marks which are somewhat due to his problems?

Does anyone have any experience of a disability being taken into account when applying?

I can't say for certain, but I imagine most would say any additional needs would be taken into account with access arrangements for GCSEs and any entrance exams. Although if he just misses their offer they may be lenient if they believe the results don't accurately reflect his ability.

Does DS have access arrangements?

Yes, shouldn't cause any problems. They need to give him extra time for entrance test. They will already have kids with a similar profile.
