More House School Frensham or Moor House School Oxted

Hi eveyone, I'm hoping that current parents of either school can give me an idea of what it's like at these schools as, due to Covid restrictions, I can't visit in person and see them and get a feel for the children who are attending and a general feel for the schools.

We're in year 5 with a son who likely has developmental language disorder who is very high functioning and talented in other areas but will need more support in English/reading comprehension as he progresses. He doesn't want to look different to other children so ideally we would like support provided as part of school provision rather than being pulled out of class for language help.

Both these schools look fantastic online. I'd be grateful for any current parents insight. Thanks a lot!

Looking for a SEN school for 6th form for my DS with dyslexia dyspraxia and ADHD. Thinking of downsizing to pay for independent SEN and wondering if anyone know if More House in Frensham or Bredon is better. Could move to either area. Really grateful for any views. Bredon is mixed sex which is appealing but More house seems to get great reviews. Not so many re Bredon

@Chesham I'm so interested too. My 5 year old guy has DLD as well 😊

myfatiguehastiredness · 17/10/2020 07:06

Moore House in Oxted is fantastic and is a world leader in DLD.

Saltn · 05/12/2020 21:11

My son has DLD and is in More House.
I have some regret that I didn't send him to Moor House, but the grass is greener and all that. More House is not as good for DLD as Moor House IMO, but still better than most other schools. Speech and language is delivered as a group and therapists dont work in the actual classroom AFAIK , unlike moor House where they do.

I find More House a bit inflexible if you need more than they offer as they have a system where boys go to therapies in groups. My son is very happy there though.

More House take a wider range of SEN I think as well. Most seem to have ASD, whereas I dont know what the situation is for Moor House as DLD is often associated with ASD from what I understand so maybe it's the same. Some 'just' have dyslexia at More House. I feel my DS might have made more progress at Moor House as I dont think his difficulties are always picked up at More House. But they also fewer subject options. But More House is 100 times better than his mainstream school he left! So difficult with DLD.

Saltn · 05/12/2020 21:13

I meant Moor House has fewer subjects to choose from than More House. I want DS just to find something he enjoys and is good at which I think he has more chance of at More House. But , overall I suspect the input is better at Moor House for DLD.

Please could someone give me the links for both these schools? I’m so confused between them both

Hi, I hope this is not too late. My son has dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD though he is not on the spectrum. He has been at More House since year 4. He is now in year 10. It is an outstanding school. Most of the time he wants to go to school whereas at his primary school he never wanted to go to school. I Cannot put my finger on exactly what the school does but whatever it is it’s remarkable. They understand the children, they encourage, they are positive and have lots of different strategies for a child. The children are also really friendly and polite.
Obviously I hope you find what you want for your son.

My child in year 5 also has DLD. I haven't considered Moor House before as I thought the children have to have quite severe DLD. I would say my DS's is mild (on his recent SALT assessment she wasn't sure he would meet criteria for DLD anymore )but it has a significant impact on his learning-he is behind and struggles to follow what the teacher is saying quite often.

Constanttaxiservice · 21/01/2021 19:56

sorry, not much help with your question. My son sounds similar to yours and I was wondering whether you needed to be a certain level behind your peers to go to Moor House or not (if that makes sense...)

Wilma2019 · 23/01/2021 09:27

Our DS has DLD no ASD and mild dyspraxia and moved to Moor House in year 4. The other More House is too far away. We were also worried whether the peer group would be a lot more severe than he is but- and I don’t know whether their intake is broadening compared with previous years- DS slotted right in no problem. I think the therapy is great ; I think the academic standard in the lower years is on the low side because they are focussed on rebuilding lost confidence - but I think even that is adapting as well because the kids seem pretty capable. My concern with MH is that my DS still needs a lot of support in the classroom and I felt that he is not quite ready for that in between stage. Kids do move between the two schools though and it is an option later on if we felt he was ready to work with less support. But that said I also like the co-Ed environment because it means the kids will be comfortable and confident around the opp sex which is hard enough even if you don’t have any difficulties etc. Hope this helps- obvs it’s a totally subjective view and others may have different insights.

Hello All, In terms of Wilma's comment about the More House (Frensham) peer group possibly being too severe (if I have understood the comment correctly, if not I apologise - the intention is to provide information not to criticise or admonish anyone). My 14 yo has ADHD, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. I've been to several plays and music evening there and know his friends. My experience is that the boys generally are not severely "disabled". Yes they take ASD children but they tend to be at the milder end of the spectrum. If you are considering it the best advise is to go and see it, ask questions - you'll get honest answers. If they think they can help and if you think they can help the child can have a trial day.
Boys commute from a quite a way away. There are a group who get the train, some from London. The school bus meets them at Farnham station.

Wilma2019 · 25/01/2021 12:29

Agree visiting a school is the only real way to see for yourself. Apologies if my post was not clear: we were concerned about MH Oxted being potentially too severe as a peer group ( it turned out not to be and we’re really happy) - and when we were weighing up MH Frensham we were concerned that MH Frensham presented us with the opposite dilemma in that our DS is not quite ready to work independently in the classroom and still needs a lot of support sometimes 1:1. Agree with the previous posters observation that the boys at MH Frensham are more mild / their difficulties can be less visible and it’s also a fantastic school.

This school more house in frensham dose not have the great reputation its Says it has. Back in the past I went here in the 80s. Physical and in some cases sexual abuse took place with certain teachers there . Most are now dead . This school knows its horrible past yet continues too reject any wrongdoing. This school should of Been closed down years ago.
