Nhs or private suspected ADHD

Has anyone got any advice on whether to go privately or Nhs?

My son (Y1) has a lot of trouble concentrating in school coupled with a few sensory issues as well. I suspect he has inattentive type ADHD and the school have written a letter in support of a referral to be assessed.

We could possibly pay to go privately but the Senco said as he is still only 5 we might pay only to be told he is too young to tell.
My concern with going through Nhs is that with the inattentive type (if it is indeed this) they might be less likely to give a diagnosis (again, if there is one to be had).

Are these valid concerns?
If we do go privately and receive some sort of diagnosis should we then try and get one on the Nhs as well?

Thanks!

I’ve heard a few times that the nhs won’t even take a private diagnosis into account and still want to do a diagnosis anyway. But of course for your own sanity and if you can afford it then it’s a possibility. Again, 5 is quite young. I’ve never know a child be diagnosed with adhd that young.

It’s great the school are on board and are supporting it.

In our case my son has already been diagnosed with autism but pretty sure he has adhd too but the school aren’t seeing the issues we have. So the school are dismissing our concerns. He has full time 1:1 at school though. He wouldn’t cope without it.

Good luck!

Also, there are some parent adhd/asd groups on Facebook (if you’re on Facebook of course). It’s good to see what others are going through and getting tips and advice.

Each area is completely different as well.

Thanks @ADJ1151 I have just joined one of the Facebook groups.

It seems to be a complete minefield! I am concerned about paying only to be told he is too young to really tell.
One of his classmates has been diagnosed but is definitely hyperactive whereas my son is not.

I hope you have luck with your school with regards to your son. We have been very lucky that our Senco and class teacher are on board and have made adjustments for him. However the changes only made a difference in his concentration/procrastination for about a week.
