Does anyone recognise this? - clumsy, hyperactive and slow at school

My 8 year old daughter is starting to lag behind at school. Every year so far she managed to catch up in the second half of the year but this year her grades were so bad that I am worried.

Her teachers so far have not raised it as an issue, but I am bit concerned as I also see other things she cannot do well physically.

  • She is a gymnast and can do the craziest movements, but
  • she cannot skip or do hops or small jumps neatly in a row.
  • she is quite clumsy and will throw over everything in sight for no apparent reason
  • Even when it is an open book exam, she cannot find the answer on the page. Even when there is a picture with the answer next to the question, she is unable to deduce the answer.
  • It took a long time for her to understand numbers (i.e. anything beyond 10). I.e. when asked what comes after 100 she would say 200.
  • We´re working on the multiplication tables for two years now, but it just doesn´t stick.
  • Basic concepts such as Christmas being on the same day every year - she just doesn´t get it. I will tell her, she will say she understands (Jesus being born etc.), but at the exam she will happily write down 25 November or 11 January, etc.
  • Most of the day she is super active, standing upside down, doing her gym exercises etc. She can sit still and concentrate on tv and tablet though.
  • She plays well with friends but gets easily upset if they don´t play nice. She is sad because she doesn´t have a best friend.

We´ve had her eyes checked and there was nothing. If I look at adhd for girls, what comes up is always that it concerns chatty girls. She is not chatty but somehow I also don´t think she is always able to concentrate at school.

Would this be something you recognise or take further?
Many thanks!

I'm not sure I wouldn't have her checked for autism. It's much less obvious in girls than in boys, but a lot of this does relate to it. Better to be thought a shade neurotic than let her flog herself at school - I've been there and my girl's only just starting to come back to herself.

Yes push for an assessment. Could be a range of issues going on, but would be diagnosed as whatever dominated. Working memory and social issues are common to several possibilities.
