Possibly dyslexia

I wanted some advice on getting my DD assessed for dyslexia.

She is in yr 2 but one of the oldest in the class. Her reading and writing is progressing very slowly and she is getting frustrated and upset that she can't read like her friends.

We read everyday and she can tell you all her phonics and key words. However reading is slow going and she struggles to decode longer words.

Her writing has barely improved in a year. The school have provided many interventions but I don't feel it has helped as it should (not their fault). This is leading me to believe she does have an issue - potentially dyslexia. She ticks all the boxes on the NHS website.

It is more apparent now as her younger sibling who is 23 months younger has overtaken her in reading and writing.

I just want some advice in pushing for an assessment.

The school have told me I need to go via the GP. However that seems to contradict advice from other sources. I have also been told the local authority won't consider a private assessment.

I just don't want to be fobbed off so any experiences or advice would be appreciated.

Thank you

have you spoken to SENco at her school? they may be able to provide a screening for dyslexia. you can also take the nessy test on her behalf, and see how highly she scores, which will let you push for an assessment. You can go via the GP, people recommend that as it allows them to check for other things that could be stopping her learning, like ADHD or sight issues. you can also contact the national dyslexia helpline on 0333 405 4567 (open 10am-3pm) for advice and see if they can recommend anywhere near you that can do the assessment, give you an idea of costing etc. sorry this is all muddled together, i am typing as it comes into my head!

Thank you - DD scored 22/30 on that. I have spoken to the Senco before who just said she was within the age appropriate range and her year 1 teacher wasn't encouraging her enough. 🤷🏼‍♀️
The Senco is very hard to get hold of and works across 5 schools. I think because DD is well behaved, they assume it's because I don't do enough with her - which couldn't be further from the truth. She is therefore a low priority.
Is the GP the right route?

I would go via the GP in that case. they can advise on next steps and perhaps refer you for assessment. all the best x

What test did she score 22/30 on?
