Dyslexia assessment - Ed psych or specialist teacher

My daughter is dyslexic - I had a short assessment done when she was 8. Her father, grandfather and aunts are also dyslexic and she demonstrated very similar issues as they do.

She's now in Yr 8 and being in a big busy high school - there isn't as much in house support as her smaller primary.

I wanted to get a full assessment done and I've been recommended a teacher assessor who appears passionate about dyslexia and has a huge list of SEN qualifications and experience. She also focuses heavily on coping strategies and advice for schools to support the assessed child.

Then, I read that she should have an Ed psych assessment done - not a teacher.

I think it must be crazy to devalue a teachers assessment but I do want to have a report for the school to use.

Does anyone have experience of this?

If you already know she’s dyslexic then a Specialist teachers report is fine. If you wanted to ensure that she qualifies for extra time/ movement breaks/ assistive technology etc then you would need to go for an Ed Psych report.

If the teacher has the Specific Learning Difficulties diploma qualification then they can do a full assessment and make recommendations in the same way an EP can but without the diploma then they cannot
