Starting EHCP assessment as a parent

My son has always been behind. At school he's working far behind his peers - more than two years. He has problems with his short term memory which means he doesn't know the day, he doesn't know if he has school that day, even in the middle of school holidays he asks whether he has to go to school. He has dyslexia although it's not officially diagnosed. His SEN report suggests he's not severe enough for an assessment but we think differently. He's 10 years old and really struggles with school and friends. He gets really low, cries a lot. Does anyone have any experience of applying for EHCP assessment that might be able to advise me on what things to include in the forms?

Have a look on this website

I second looking at the IPSEA website, which also has a draft letter explaining how to apply. We've just done this and it has gone well. Just put in as much proof as possible into the letter, and be prepared to appeal as some councils seem to be turning down 1st requests as standard. Personally I'd consider getting the diagnosis for dyslexia as that may help your cause. I know they are supposed to assess needs but I do think that any diagnoses do help them decide.

I agree apply for an EHC Needs assesssment yourself citing everything you have said in your OP and the fact that it is now impacting on his mental health.I would also send in any school reports you have which indicate how much he is struggling.

Apart from all the ones listed on IPSEA's site I would ask for assessments from SLT, a psychiatrist and a dyslexia specialist. And OT if there are any sensory issues.

As PP said, a lot of LAs turn down initial requests for EHC Needs assessments as a matter of course, and then back down when parents appeal, so you need to be prepared to fight.

The IPSEA advice line can help if necessary.
