Referral didn't get sent. What can I do?

9yo son was referred by school for assessment (suspected ADHD). haven't heard anything for over 6 weeks, called the assessment centre today and they said they haven't received anything. So it seems that the school didn't send the referral. Waiting for this assessment has been the only thing keeping me going as his behaviour has been getting less and less manageable, and now we're back to square one. Assessment centre won't do anything without a referral. There's nobody at the school I can talk to, and he's no longer their responsibility anyway as he's moved up to middle school. The GP is completely useless. So what can I do now? Waiting until September and starting the whole process again isn't really an option, but it might be the only one. I'm absolutely furious and have no idea how to navigate this.

In our area the referrals have to come from schools, they are rejected from gps. I'm not surprised you are frustrated. Unfortunately if the gp can't help it may need to be something that is actioned again in September. Very annoying for you though. Good luck.

Speak to the SENCo straight away at the new school, exlain that the ld school said they were sending in the referral, but that when you checked (in the holidays) the Assessment Centre said they'd not received it yet, and ask could the SENCo at the new school follow it up as a matter of priority please as clearly you have already lost several weeks.
New SENCo will probably phone old school and have a conversation with the SENCo from the old school.

This will happen again and again working through the system. Referrals get lost constantly and it's a fucking pain in the arse (our record was 4 needed before one made it through the system for continence nurse support with DD2).

I found the best thing I could do was to make a spreadsheet (sad I know) of when I'd had discussions and seen completed referral forms and diary in a couple of weeks later to just gently ring up both the originator and the recipient and ever so politely say that I'd had a nightmare with post in our area lately and was just keeping my own records up to date, had the referral been sent/got there? Usually the second they found you were keeping track (and I was quite honest that I had it all in a spreadsheet to keep track of it myself) - the efficiency of the system improved massively. I also requested copies of everything so that if something did go astray during the holidays like you're finding - I could send them a copy of my copy and prod them up the arse as well.

Also worth finding out the exact referral pathway in your area (thankfully our SENCO is great) - we had a few wasted times when the GP sent us on wild goose chases to avoid doing referrals (GP got a right earful from the place he tried to fob us off to mind you)!
