Advice on good schools for boy with ASD (Aspergers) in Oxford

My son has just been diagnosed with Aspergers (ASD). He is pretty high-functioning, bright, good at school work and can interact, but classically bad at social interaction (gets in lots of fights because he lashes out). He gets obsessed with things, but when managed well he's great in class and can cope in the playground. He can make friends, but it's a bit slow going.

We're looking at schools for secondary. We could go independent if need be but would prefer not.

My worry is he'll get lost in a big school, and he does best when he has lots of support and understanding, and is also fed lots of interesting work in class.

Any advice on schools - good or to avoid - very welcome please!

could you have a look at northfield secondary? its a school that is specifically for pupils with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health Needs, but it still follows the national curriculum and the pupils all take GCSES and A levels.

Thanks sleepismysuperpower1 will do.

Our hope is we can fit him into a conventional school with good support as he's fairly high functioning, just tricky at time.

Hi -- I am currently working with a few agencies, (SEN) in Berkshire (however, have extensive Oxfordshire schools) on their books. I am a SEN teaching Assistant in training. If you would like suggestions, I can ask around for you, depending on the type of SEn required. As far as I know (off hand) it's mainly autism spectrum disorder. Let me know.

Thanks Tungsten. That would be great. It's Aspergers and we're looking for conventional schools within Oxford ring road.

St Edwards (teddies) is supposed to be v supportive of SEN. We are considering it for ds1 (8) who has mild ASD and dyslexia.

Leckford place is less academic/ slightly alternative but I hear it provides very individual education and support.

CHerwell school has a specialist resource base for various SEN but unless you are within catchment there is little hope of getting in.

Good luck!
