Phonics books with some oomph

Hi
My 7yo son is not as advanced and confident with his reading like his peers due to SEN
can anyone recommend some phonics books that are a bit more exciting than Biff and Chip? He’s got the star wars ones and the marvel ones. Just wondering if anyone could recommend any others so that we can fan the embers so to speak?
Thanks

LEGO has a series of phonics books. they do the typical lego characters solving crimes etc, and a lego super hero series too x

I ended up writing them (typed). DD is very bright but very dyslexic so she wasn't interested in what Biff and Chip were doing anyway - no motivation to read it. If she was interested in something I would base it on that.
So 'Eskimos live in the North Pole. It is very cold so they dress in warm clothes made of fur. They live in igloos made of ice that they build themselves. They eat lots of fish. Life was hard so many Eskimos now live in villages'. I would then put pictures and maps in to break up the text so that we could discuss it and she would always me ask questions about. It normally took about an hour a night because she was interested and wanted to know more than I had written....it was more play than work.

In fact I ended up writing a story featuring Harry Potter over the space of 2 months hahaha.

You can change the level of the words you include over time and if they are really struggling with a specific word keep reusing it in the next instalment. You can also start with a large font and make it smaller as they progress....plus make sure that each day's reading ended of a cliff hanger so they were very keen on continuing the next day.

It wasn't as big a commitment as it sounds. I would spend 20 mins at lunchtime at work writing it - you will be surprised at how quickly you learn to summarise and simplify the language. Eventually she progressed to using a kindle with the font made very large so could read things I didn't write.

..anyway that may not be a practical suggestion for you.

Wow!! I love that idea. I might give that a go. Thanks so much for the suggestion.
This would probably work because he finds most phonics books really boring and I hadn’t even thought about trying to put something together myself about things he likes.
Brilliant! Xx
