Its so hard to get support in my sons current secondary school he has a diagnosis of aspergers syndrome they have refused to access his needs as they say he is doing fine and is coping well even though he has missed alot of school due to stress and is under camhs for mental health problems his pychologist and his doctor think my son requires an ehcp and they have let the school know still nothing has been done I am now in the process of applying for one on my own and requested my sons school file which shows alot of behaviour and disruptive issues in the classroom which had been played down in sen meetings and theres alot of parental blame grrr!! He is now known as a persistent absentee but is still on track to get level 5 in 4 of his gcse so academically ok after alot of researching statuory assesments I am disheartened to find 'the school must have exhausted all resources before an assesment will be carried out' how the hell will I get an ehcp when I cant even get my son on any kind of sen support ???

Contact SOS SEN for some support.

You will likely struggle to get the LA to agree to an assessment if the school don't think it is warranted. You can apply directly to the SEND Tribunal to force the LA to assess, though not necessarily award, an EHCP. Have a look at IPSEA for model letters/explanations.
Please be aware though that an EHCP isn't a golden ticket to getting good Sen support. Some schools give excellent support without one, others (as in my DD's ex-school) rarely bother to read, nevermind implement, it. Yes, I know that's against the Law. If the school already see your son as capable but trouble, and you as an ineffective parent, I would be tempted to look for an alternative school as a fresh start for you both. You don't say what year your son is in, but the EHCP process isn't quick. Has he got time to wait? Not knowing either of you, I would suggest that even with an EHCP in place, the school don't seem particularly keen to deliver additional support and would be dragging their heels and would hear your voice as white noise.

If you decide to keep him where he is, or if there is nothing else locally, roll up your sleeves and become an email warrior. Every communication you have about your school from now on has to be in writing. If there is a call from school, email the Head/Senco and document the call. Every meeting you are in, fully minute and send all the participants a copy. Not just with school either. The Dr, camhs, the LA... everyone! The process is not easy, but you have the best motivation, your DS. Use that to power and focus you and you will succeed.
