ADHD but sleeps very well?

Hi there - my DS is currently on half-term. He struggles with attention/concentration at school and displays disruptive behaviour (chatting during class or larking around) due to boredom. He’s currently being investigated by CAHMS but we’ve been told that it’s unlikely that he has enough traits to be formally diagnosed with ADHD or ASD.

I’ve been observing him closely this week. He’s always been full of energy/hyper and impulsive in home setting but he’s manageable and we easily get on with with daily activities such as shopping, eating out, day trips out etc (just with lots of reminders/tellings off to calm down/be quiet). However, he a very loud child - he speaks loudly and talks/asks questions constantly about anything and everything (unless watching tv or absorbed in an activity). When not actually speaking he’ll sing silly made up songs or blurt out random nonsense (usually about poo/bums 🙄). He’s also started doing a fake villain-type laugh and will just do it randomly, regardless of whether or not something amusing is actually happening. I ask him to think about things/sing his songs etc in his head but he says he doesn’t know how to do that because his mind goes blank. He says that when he’s quiet/not speaking or making noises, he’s bored. He can’t cope with being bored and so entertains himself with noise.

I think he might have ‘mild’ ADHD. However, he sleeps perfectly (unlike his younger sibling 🙄). He goes to bed at 8ish with virtually no resistance and sleeps right through to 7.30ish. As a baby/toddler, he napped wonderfully well too. Can it be possible for him to have ADHD but sleep so well/easily? I suppose the same question goes for ASD too.

Yes, you can sleep well and have ADHD.

Consider sensory processing instead of ADHD as some kids have a physical need to move. Vestibular/proprioception sensory disorder. Also look at auditory processing disorder as can mimic ADHD.

hi OP

Agree with checking for other issues before the ADHD/ASD label.

DS has a reading comprehension deficit as confirmed by ed psych.

Due to stress levels about this, it can seem like ADHD.

There are so many other diagnoses out there. Be careful something is not missed.

Good luck.
