SEN and university application

Dd has an EHCP and has been granted extra time for her A level exams. She is adamant that she doesn’t want extra time as she doesn’t want to start uni with the “stigma” attached.

Will uni ever know about the extra time? I keep telling her they won’t and that she should use the extra time as she is entitled to it and would be disadvantaged without it, but she is determined to go to uni “with a clean slate”.

Any insights greatly appreciated!

From what I understand the uni is not given any info unless you tell them. The ehcp no longer applies when they go off to uni, even though it runs on to 25 if they do not. I had long discussions about this with my DS and he decided to tick the disability box on the UCAS form and draft a paragraph on how ASD and dyspraxia can affect him. He also emailed one uni before interview as it required a written task but didn’t for another 2 as he wanted to get through on his own merit (whatever that meant).
If you haven’t ticked the box on your ucas application you can still disclose a disability/SpLD/mental health problem to student services at a uni and can tell them specifically who you want the info passed on to, including no one on the course if that’s what you prefer.

Oh and there’s no stigma attached to having extra time in exams at uni. I teach some undergrad courses and I’ve not had any where some students weren’t assigned extra time for various reasons I wasn’t privy to. They just had a slightly different exam timetable.
