Which MFL is best suited for dyslexic kids?

We have been given French, German, Spanish and Mandarin as options of MFL towards sitting GCSEs. Does anyone have experience for views as to which one would best suit dyslexic kids.. I would imagine Mandarin would be the hardest but would welcome any comments on the others. Thank you in advance.

I'm sure someone else will come along and give much better advice, but my gut is to say German.

Having learnt French, German and a little bit of Mandarin, I found the grapheme-phoneme link in German much easier.

I'm not dyslexic, however. My son is, so I will be watching your post with interest!

Someone told me Spanish, but we aren't at the stage of choosing yet. DS is doing French in Yr5 and enjoying it but finding the vocab very hard.

Sorry, OP, I have no experience of dyslexia, but I just had to say, can I come and live where you are please? Grin Our schools are all going down to one language, no choice, and I am ever so jealous.

What I would say is that German is the more similar to English phonetically, and that may help. But the 'reversed' word order may be an issue.

I understand Mandarin grammar to be relatively easy, but character recognition maybe hard for someone with dyxlexia.

Those are the two issues I'd consider. Worth speaking to the HOD?

Thank you True and Sticky, we are lucky that her school will offer this option and we want to choose very carefully. My other DS without dyslexia is required to do French and the amount of irregular this and that seems quite a challenge and I’m worried it will spell disaster for my DD with dyslexia. She has had a taster of Mandarin and the character recognition towards the end was challenging for her. I guess our best bet is either German or Spanish. We will seek out HOD but DDs school has very few SEN with dyslexic kids which makes it even harder to gauge.

Spanish. It's phonetically regular so much easier to learn for dyslexic pupils than most other languages.

German is easier to start with as the vocabulary is more similar. But the grammar gets difficult as you progress.
It might be a good choice if you feel dc would cope with the challenge once they had got to enjoy the language initially and had a positive outlook.

Spanish possibly is harder to start with, but is a very regular language and the main grammar challenge is conjugation of verbs which are regular.
