School Upset DS before Assessment

Hi my DS age 8 was assessed by SENCO yesterday. I did not know assessment was taking place but did know it would happen at some point. I believe this is the first stage of tests a SENCO gives a child they believe has learning difficulties.

Before assessment DS was told by teacher he could no longer play with his friend and they should remain separated from now onwards. DS adores his friend but there have been many fallings out that have made my DS sad and teacher thought best. But tbh I thought that was harsh in general and terrible timing.

Am not sure doing an assessment straight after that would have been wise? If upset would he have impacted the testing?

Can't say without knowing what difficulties it is that your ds is having, but a) most assessments are just working with the child without them necessarily being aware it is part of an assessment - dc get 'assessed' so often throughout school, it is no big deal to them and b) people who do the assessments are always aware that they just see a 'snapshot' of the child for those 30mins or whatever, and what they see will only be a part of any information gathering.

Thirdly, in a bit of a perverse way, if you are hoping that your ds is going to get some additional support, then the greater his need, the more likely he is to get some support, or to get more support, so, inadvertently, if he doesn't "score" well in the assessment. then the thery is he would get more help. I know it isn't that straight a line, but it might not be a bad thing for him.
