Going back a year

My son is in year 4, has ADHD and ODD. He has just been baseline tested and his reading level is at yr 1.
We are moving across the country and I'm wondering whether we should hold him back a year (repeat yr 4 in new school).
Has anyone had any experience of holding their kids back or were you held back and what was the effect?

Private school? Very possible if there’s s space in the Year below. State school? Very very unlikely unless it is stated on his EHCP

Thanks for your reply Lara, he's in a state school and we're in the process of applying for his EHCP.

My DS did go back a year in state school but a long time ago (he’s now 21) even then it was very unusual. He moved from yr 1 back to reception, his birthday is right at the end of August and he is very dyslexic.
I also have a friends son who went back a year (private school) when he moved schools at age 11/12, also very dyslexic.
I think it really helped them both but I can imagine it may be hard to get a state school to agree.
