I'm not sure if this is the right place to post... I have a 6 year old in year 1 she is a September baby so she is one off the oldest in her class.... she has always had a issue with listening and following a instruction but I thought she was just a will full kid ...... she can never sit still for very long and I have noticed she doesn't like bright lights or loud noises ....fast forward to today and her teacher wanted a chat with me ....she said that my dd is haveing difficulties with her reading and writing and her pencil grip and her concentration so she has asked a sen teacher to come and observe her in class ..... I burst out crying as I know she finds it hard to make friends as it is I feel so sorry for her .... should I be really worried ??because I really feel it xx

I would say, if she is having all those difficulties, that you should be pleased that it is now being recognised, and that she will get the support and / or differentiation that she needs.
Were none of these things highlighted in Reception, or if she went to Nursery ?

Thank you for your reply ... when my daughter was in reception my oldest child died due to sepsis so I think I overwhelmed her teacher with my grief and I think if he did pick up something he would off been a bit reluctant to tell me given the circumstances.... I am grateful for her new teacher to pick up something is not quite right I just feel sad for her even though she is a happy little girl ..... I really don't understand much about learning difficulties even though my oldest was born with them but because he needed so much medical intervention I sort off overlooked it because I was worried bout his health so much .... x

So sorry for your loss. 💐The school will deal with your DDs needs and set up some interventions to help her. Don’t worry. She will do a phonics screening test at the end of Year 1 so you’ll know from this if there are learning issues.

Hi, frst of all I am so sorry for your loss. It sounds like your dad may have sensory issues or dyspraxia. Dyspraxia is difficulty with fine/gross motor skills and following more than one instruction and poor concentration. They thought my ds had dyspraxia even though there was no official diagnosis. He was very sensitive to light and labels in clothes. He was later with writing and really struggled to use a knife and fork. There can be elements of dyslexia that can run alongside it so the fact they are picking up on it is fantastic. This is nothing to worry about my ds is happy (now 16), he has extra time with exams and booster classes but it is not a problem with everyday life. Just give her one step instructions and be aware of her senses being heightened which may cause her anxiety. It will be fine, do not over worry on this it is a lot more common than you think.
