Thinking about getting a tutor for ADHD child 8yr old

My DD (8) is happy and making progress at school since starting methylphenidate last year, but it’s clear she’s behind and the school have the usual issues with stretched resources. We could look into the EHCP but it’s stressful and we’d have no control of how they use the funds.

I’m thinking of a regular tutoring session privately. We just can’t get her engaged as parents but an outside influence may be able to. She is bright but struggles to focus.

I suspect my 6yr old also has difficulties, either focus or possibly dyslexia (it runs in the family). She’s so behind in her reading, even compared to her sister with unmedicated ADHD. Again she won’t focus when reading with me, it’s a total battle. Would it be worth getting extra help at this age?

Thanks

Hi there. Our son is 9 and has ADHD. He has an EHCP. He isn’t medicated. He is totally disengaged at school. He has checked out of education a bit I think. He has a tutor for just 30 mins a week with a view to gradually increasing the time to an hour. We have asked her to make learning fun and to practice Maths he can already do. It is more so he can experience the satisfaction and enjoyment of learning and hopefully get a bit more engaged. She is great. She makes it fun, with lots of games and competitions which he loves. He is extremely resistant to school but he enjoys his tutoring sessions. She will gradually start to stretch him but we are playing the long game with it.

We also have big battles about homework so when it all gets too much we leave that for her to do with him.

Good luck.
