My DS clearly has mild sensory processing difficulties. These are as a result of his prematurity (9 weeks), and as a result his school is struggling to help him with these. He has just changed school, and the new one is brilliant on the whole, but doesn’t seem to have experience in this if it is a stand-alone issue.
DS (who is 6) is pretty good at self-regulating now - he’s learned for example that if he’s out and about and his clothes suddenly feel rough and scratchy, we’ll change them as soon as we can. Or when you’re cooking, you might need to get your hands a bit slimy when you crack an egg, but you can wash them immediately. What we can’t seem to sort is his difficulty with the bump and grind - literally! - of school life. That kids will bump into him, or push him, or jostle him, and punching them on the nose isn’t really the answer! He also finds it really difficult not to touch kids all the time himself, which also of course leads to trouble.
Are there any strategies I can suggest to the school to help with this? Also ways to highlight this as a sensory issue that needs addressing as such?
Thank you!
