BAS Percentile - can someone explain it to me please?

My DS has been assessed, but I don't understand the report (and I have a degree in Maths!). Does, for example, the 79 percentile mean that 79 percent of his age range would be expected to achieve that, or does it mean that 21 percent would?

I'm totally confused (and more than a little upset tbh - the written report seems to bear little relation to what I was told at the time!)

Just to add, I thought it meant the second meaning, but I was told he was really good at Maths, but then his numeracy percentile was only 4!

This means that out of 100 children, 96 would score higher than your son. A percentile of 99 would mean that child could only be out-performed by one child.

If you want any advice or support I work as an advisor for parents on all isues, especally special needs, their own feelings having had such an assessment, and understanding ed psychs reports. You can email me on [email protected]

I am currently working with a family where the school didn't think the child had any real problems, one independent ed pysch. said she was "just behind" and the ed psych at Dyslexia Action has just found her to be severely dyslexic, which was my own opinion and why I advised the family to investigate it further.

In a sample of 100 children the 79th percentile would be the level of the 79th child, ie. 21 perform better and 78 worse. It is purely a statistical tool.

Thank you.

DH and I have asked for a meeting with the head to discuss the results. I've talked it through with my DH, and we've established that I've not over-reacted to what she has put in the assessment. I do feel entirely misled over what she said to me at the time, and what has transpired in the report! The head was there at the time we went through it, so I'll see what she says!
