Havent posted for a while, but have been posting over the last few years. At the beginning of my we had our diagnosis. Its taken me a while to get my head around it, but its ok now. The diagnosis was very quick in the end, we filled out forms, school did the same, we went for an appoinment by ourselves to see consultant and then took ds for another one where he was tested for 30-40mins and that was it. Im still not convinced but have gone with it because the school will be more accommodating. He is fine in main stream school and is doing ok at school . Writing and spelling not brilliant but maths and reading are fine. He doesnt have big tantrums although does get annoyed easily i guess, he hates having to sit and do writing or spellings. Other than concentrating the school doesnt have to do any special for him. He sleeps well at night and we can go anywhere without any problems at all, ie, dentist, theme park...went to legoland this weekend....got an exit pass so we didnt need to queue up for rides...hes always been fine with queuing but though we would take advantage of it. We booked dup to do a course in sept to help us understand things and have bought a trampoline to help with co-ordination, etc. Hes a very loving little boy, loves cuddles and has so many interests. I find it hard to accept theres anything wrong at all because he is just so adorable.

Pepsi - I remember your posts about your ds. Feel free to join us over on the SN board if you ever want/need to. Is the course you're doing the Help! course?

Hi pepsi i think we have spoken before. Im at the beginning of diagnosis for my DS who is nearly 7. we have seen peadiatrician once and school have had to do a report as well as the ed psych but apart from that i dont know what else happens! Im sturggling to cope after the pead told me DS is on the spectrum and needs to be placed! DH is struggling big style with this. DS has a violent temper and only today trashed the classroom but my DS is above average intelligence.
Can i ask what this course is?

Hi Pepsi
my ds was given a diagnosis of HF/ASD at the end of reception when he was 5, we didn't really believe it either.
Unfortunately, we had a very difficult year at school in year 1, but this did help us to get a good statement.
He is now coming to the end of year 2, we have had a great year and the extra help had worked really well for him.
I feel like I now have my lovely boy back, I know what you mean about finding it hard to accept, sometimes it is difficult when they often function the same as NT peers. I know that sometimes I feel like a fraud, if that makes sense, because he seems easy, other times it does come back to me that there is a difference.
I now know, because we did have such a difficult time in year 1, that things change and just because things are going well at the moment it does not mean that it will stay like that.
I did the NAS Help programme, which was really useful, I have also joined the local support groups, which has helped me to meet others in the same situation.
good luck with everything

Hi Pepsi and others. I can really relate to what you say. Your experience sounds very similar to mine. My ds is also terrible with writing and spelling but good at maths and reading. Main problems are social atm. He really wants to join in but always seems outside the main crowd. He is now becoming more aware of this. He does have a couple of friends however and I think he is just about hanging on in there socially!! He is very cuddly and sweet a lot of the time and I have also just got a trampoline for the garden which he loves. Please keep posting either here on the SN board as it is really good to hear how others are getting on.

The course we are going to do is called Moving On. Its four sessions of about 2hours I think. It starts in Sept and we will go every other week. Whats the Special needs board, is this not it?

Have to ask(hope not hijacking too much)but, how did you know there was something wrong and what made you get him tested?
I ask because I have ds12 who has some probs mainly with socialisation and behaviour(he had major phsical outbursts from age 5/6 through untill about 1yr ago.Have kind of an idea about why but am not sure.He is a lot better now but still has probs and am concerned incase I should have done something.
Also could someone please explain the symptoms(think thats the right word)of aspergers as we have been told that he has some?
Again sorry if hijacking but you made me think about it.

Will this help, Singingmum? NAS guide to Aspergers

Pepsi - If you go to the main MN page where the topics are listed, the Special Needs section is towards the top. It gets confusing because this section is called Special Educational needs whereas the other section is just called Special Needs.

Thank you.
Think after reading that I can see what those people were on about now.He fits most of what is said there.Although he can write stories after years of not writing anything much but only to do with his fav subjects. He is lousy at math and doesn't get it at all.

As I HE does anyone know wether it's worth seeing someone to find out for sure or should I leave it?
Any advice appreciated.

Singmum, sorry just read your posting.

I think it is def worth getting a diagnosis. This will help in getting more support for ds at school. I have found having the formal diagnosis invaluable in obtaining more help. Also it has helped me and the family understand ds so much more and shown me the way to help him myself.

From what I have read secondary school can throw up a lot of problems so a diagnosis will help in getting the school to take matters seriously. Good luck with this
