Very recent diagnosis of severe dyslexia. School are completing a EHCP, their suggestion. I need to complete my section of the form. Does anyone have one in place for their dc with dyslexia. If so any advice of what I should include and what school should be putting to maximise our chances?

Hi, it's great that school are supporting this - I think it's quite rare. My son never had one but I think you should specify that the person givng specialist suport have training in dyslexia and 5 years experience. Measure progress in small steps.

We're looking into doing the same after our DD was recently diagnosed. Our EP said we needed to show a continual decline in attainment despite intervention by the school. We've requested the last 3 years of assessment data from the school along with a meeting to work out what interventions they've used and how effective they have been. This is led by us as the school are utterly useless though. Hmm

We’ve not had an ed psych assessment yet. Currently looking into having one done privately. So you are putting that in with your application jayne232

DD is 9 and in year 5. I'm not sure what we'll be putting in as it's early stages. I don't even know if it's possible.

We just got our diagnosis at the end of the year too. If you’ve had an ed psych assessment you have done quite a bit though. Did you have it done privately?

When my DS was diagnosed by the LA Ed Psych (10 years ago now) we were told he would not qualify for a statement -as it was then - because although his learning difficulty was severe, he would need more complex problems as well to qualify. He actually said that is DS threw chairs around it would help! In the end we removed DS from his primary and self funded a specialist school, as we felt it was our only option and we could just about stretch to it.

Curious how you know yours has got severe dyslexia though if you haven't seen an EP yet. I hope you get the support you need without too much of a fight.

Yes we paid for an assessment. I have no idea if a EHCP is realistic.

The school understood the full diagnostic assessment. Thanks the school are really good in terms of the assessment process but sometimes what they can offer on a day to day basis doesn’t meet a child’s needs does it.

School staff don't usually diagnose dyslexia (not in my area anyway), unless someone there has a specialist (level 7) qualification. They can 'identify' traits. A 'Response to intervention' model is recommended (Rose report etc) so the school will have to set out what evidence based interventions they have used and state their effectiveness. If the school have begun the EHCP process then I wouldn't pay for a private EP assessment. If an EHCP assessment is agreed your child will see an EP provided by the LA

Yes people have said to me we were lucky to get the full diagnostic assessment, as you say different areas. The EHCP is completed but we are concerned it won’t get through, think that’s one thing that’s common in any area! So hoping the ed psych will add something.

What is your situation mummyshark do you have an EHCP in place already?
