SO, 12 weeks later, DS2's appt for speech therapy has come thru (28h June). What will they do? ANd will ihave to 'translate' for him like i currently do to most ppl?

(Not much background really, he has very very few words at 2.2....lots that i understand based purely on what he is looking at/talking about etc but only one or 2 that others can recognise. Lots of bwer bwer)

My daughter was barely coherant at 3!! We had sessions with speech and laungage mob. The recorded dh and me playing with her to assess her speech. They say that one on one with the child doesn't really work with kids under 4, so this was felt the best way to proceed.

The wrote down the her words phonetically to try and see how many she knew. We took a list in of all her words, that included her version of words, that was useful.

My daughter is 4 next month and her speech is about on par for her age now. She needed grommits in her ears as she was suffering from cronic glue ear due to oversized adenoids and tonsils!(They came out too!)

We also had too further asssesment completed, one to give us an idea of her 'play age'. She wasn't too keen on this as it involved a tractor and she is more a pony kind of girl! We also had a developmental check done, this was to assess if her speech was the only part of her development that was effected. I am pleased to say it was and she aced the other tests.

I know its not much but i hope it helps.

Good Luck

thank you. both of you were helpful!

mumof2angels, his sessions wil be in a group but they do individual assessment to see which group would be beneficial for him iyswim.

cat, he also didn't do all that well on the cognitive part of his development check and as he hasn't had any ear infections (that we know of - can they get them without you knowing?) she wanted to have something in place for him starting playschol in october. He is very frustrated by no one understanding him and she thinks he just needs a nudge in the right direction!

I hope the sessions go well for you. My DD2 never compalined or ear ache! She had HUGE tonsils that almost met in the back of her throad and she snored at night and woke up alot. So the ENT guy said he would take out thhose, when i was speaking to the surgeon on the morning of the op went through her history and he felt it was best to check ears too. No-ne had ever seen her with gue ear at all! On the day of the op they drained both ears and recorded A++++ in both ears (which i was told was a massive amount). So to answer your question they can have ear problems without you knowing.

mumoftwoangels · 07/06/2007 13:54

Sorry not clear, she had tonisils and adenoids removed!

We have a SALT assessment on Thurs for ds1 who is 3.5, he has great vocab but can't pronounce certain letters properly, s,f,sh mainly and is starting to get frustrated that people and other kids are noticing he is different. He is also having an assessment with audiology for glue ear, he has never had an obvious ear infection but lots of runny noses and has a deep hoarse voice. Everyone told me not to worry until he was 4 but when the HV came round to see my newborn she noticed it straightaway without me even mentioning it, luckily for me we live in a quite rural area and got a cancellation pretty quickly.

musicians, I can let you know what our assessment entailed if it will help you?

MadamePlatypus · 17/06/2007 19:52

cameroonmama, I would be interested to know. DS has 'f' problems, and I am going to discuss getting him referred to a SALT next week.

cameroonmama · 17/06/2007 20:55

Sure Madameplatypus, I'll let you know. Out of interest how old is your ds?

mummytosteven · 17/06/2007 22:20

DS had a SALT assessment when he was 3, so of course may be slight different. it was at our home. from what I remember; she took a background from me about DS's birth/health, and his speech development, and what he could say. she observed him playing with his own toys, and also tested him by seeing if he recognised various everyday things like comb/doll/cup etc. Also she tested his understanding -telling him to put the doll in a bagt she had brought with eg, and looked at how he reacted to a book she had brought with.

www.hanen.org has useful information.

cameroon, that would be great if you could so that. ty

mummytosteven, that sounds like what we have already done at 2 yr check but i will take a few of his own things with me to appointment. We were asked about glue ear but he hasn;t had any ear infections that ihave noticed but has had a lot of colds. iw asn't asked about that though, maybe they will ask there?

i imagine that they may want to check his hearing anyway, just in case that has anything to do with speech problems (which would mean audiology referral)

DD had her first SALT appointment/assessment on Friday.

I went along, bringing DS with me. It was quite informal - there were two therapists there - a newly qualified helping out, and the main SALT.

DS immediately strolled in and sat down at a small table and chair set out for DD and we had to pull up another chair for her .

Then, the main SALT sat down adn started playing with building bricks with the both of them, whilst I sat with the newbie and went through basic history, what my concerns were, what my goals for her were etc etc. Then they both sat with DD and went through picture lists, asking her to say what things on the pictures were. (Whilst I attempted to amuse DS who was desperate to join in with DD )

At the end, the main SALT went through what she thought the main issues were, what needed dealing with first, what they were going to do, and what the next step was.

DD and DS had great fun, and I am now waiting to receive an appointment for DD's first Summer session.

DD is 4, btw. (DS is 2 )

moondog · 17/06/2007 22:30

All sounds right.
I'm a salt although don't do community clinic work any more.

musicianswidowAKAmumofmonsters · 17/06/2007 22:31

TY VVVQV, that was very helpful.

Lol @ your DS btw - same age as my DS2. At least it should be fun!

How long did it last? Assuming it can't go on for ages and ages but may need someone on standby to collect DS1 from nursery

I think, not sure, about 45 minutes. It was very relaxed it needed to be - DD is very sensitive and reserved.

Normally in new situations she either clams right up and just nods (absolutely NO good for a SALT assessment), or she clings to my leg and hides her face.

I spent the morning explaining to her where we were going, and, what she needed to do, and that I would be there with her all the time, etc, just to settle her in to it a bit.

When she had her hearing test (she has glue ear and hearing problems), she wasnt expecting it, and neither was I so i couldnt prepare her So she just sat there all withdrawn and not saying or doing anything. We still dont know the extent of her hearing problems, except from what we can assess from day to day life.

moondog · 17/06/2007 22:40

Won't be longer than an hour absolute max. Can't be with waiting lists being what they are.Massive pressure to number crunch.

musicianswidowAKAmumofmonsters · 17/06/2007 22:42

thats ok then- phew!

Appointment is 9:15 and allowing for the fact i may be a few mins late (dropping DS1 off) and that apparently she is often late it would still mean i am back in time for DS1

DS is 3.5 too - I am planning to mention it to the HV when DD has her 8 month check next week.

It sounds as though my DS has very similar 'issues' to your DS cameroonmama - good vocab in general, but sometimes people have difficulty understanding him.
