Anyone used Cogmed for working memory issues?

My DD (12) has been found to have a very poor working memory (particularly auditory memory). I am currently looking into Cogmed and it looks like there is increasingly strong evidence of benefit. It looks like you can actually download the app for free, but then you need to get training and support from qualified providers. How necessary is the support? It's pretty expensive and while we could probably afford it if it was essential we'd obviously much rather not if it wasn't. Any experience?
Many thanks

Don’t do it. Executive functions improved through intervention do not translate to other areas. Your money will be better spent on an executife function coach, teaching your daughter strategies to help herself. What kind of school is she at? Have you spoken to the SENCo? Will she get extra time in exams?

Hi. Thanks for your response. I've been looking at some of the research from the MRC cognitive research unit and to me it seems like there is growing recent research that it does - still not cast iron, but certainly increasingly compelling.
She's at a state comprehensive - have not yet spoken to SENCO since we've had the report (only last week) but have had little support so far and am not holding my breath unfortunately.

Am very interested in the idea of an executive function coach though as she definitely needs to learn strategies. Can you suggest where I would find one? What would be their background? I've done a quick google and can only find some in London. We're in Hampshire. so not really viable for regular meetings. I think some use Skype but am not sure how well this would work with DD?
She's only 12 at the moment so the exam issue hasn't come up, but yes, I think we would be looking at trying to get her extra time. She doesn't have a "diagnosis" though e.g. ADD, dyslexia, so I'm not sure how seriously they take working memory issues without one?

Any further advice or suggestions very readily received.

I only know of coaches in London so Skyping might be worth a try. If she is underperforming at school, Senco should advise you on getting extra time and she could get it in class tess. The earlier the better, as with time her confidence may suffer if her grades to not reflect ability and effort.

*class tests not tess

My son has autism and working memory issues. He used to get 25% extra time in exams. He's now getting 50% extra time, but he also has processing difficulties.

Has your daughter been assessed by an EP?

Apologies for bumping up an old thread, but I was wondering if anyone had had further success with Cogmed or knew of further research around its efficacy?

NotDonna · 07/07/2020 16:34

@Ellie56 how do you find a good Ed psych? Do they test for everything including ASD, ADD and dyslexia please? Is it ok to go private or is this frowned upon?

Ellie56 · 07/07/2020 23:48

@NotDonna

EPs don't "test" for ASD and other conditions although they might recognise various traits that might make them suspect autism. If you're looking for diagnosis you need to go via your GP. Sometimes you're referred to CAMHS, sometimes a paediatrician, depending on where you are in the country.

If you want an EP assessment to identify why your child struggles with learning you can find an EP here:
The British Psychological Society’s directory of chartered psychologists -
www.bps.org.uk/lists/DIR

the Association of Child Psychologists in Private Practice -
www.achippp.org.uk/

If you are wanting a private EP report for the SEND Tribunal it will be accepted.

Just wondering if you ended up using Cogmed and if you rate it?
