ASD Diagnosis and Home Education

Our 9 year old has been referred by GP and Paediatrician for suspected ASD diagnosis - however all referrals go through a referral management team who are rejecting it because of lack of information.

They are asking for various evidence most of which need to come from the assumed school, but our children are all Home Educated and so these reports are not available.

This is proving a real stumbling block to even get on the waiting lists for assessment.

Has anyone experience of this and know what other forms of evidence are accepted by other teams in other areas. We have spoken to the Autistic society and they have said other pathways have to exist and ultimately we should make it a formal complaint but we would like to have some alternatives to suggest rather than just being negative in our response.

Hi there, sounds like the referral management team may not consist of qualified staff maybe just a desk top screening. I would try Patient Advice and Liasson (PALS). Every nhs team has to have PALS. You could find out the number by googling the relevant nhs trust and ringing their switchboard. Or ring the diagnosis team and ask for a call back from the manager.I have heard of this happening unfortunately in other kinds of nhs referral and it can be quite hard to sort out. Agree you may have to make a formal complaint.
