DS is in Y2 and has ASD/PDA/ADHD. His behaviour is often quite "challenging" at both home and school, but thanks to the support from our lovely primary, he does not (yet) need a one to one. We are hopeful that he will be able to get a better handle on his emotions as he gets older and maybe there will be fewer violent episodes, but there are no guarantees.

He is also very bright, albeit with the "spiky" profile so often associated with ASD. He has a very keen, logical mind but often has difficulty expressing himself in academically relevant ways Wink particularly as his handwriting is, uh, interesting. Again, we're hoping this will improve as he gets older. But it may not.

All the same, his needs are enough that we can't send him to just any mainstream secondary school and hope for the best, and I feel he is too high functioning for special schools.

He does not yet have an EHCP and I'm aware these can take years to sort. This is why I'm thinking about this now, and also because I'd like to have some sort of idea of what to do when it comes to secondary as well.

We live in South West Herts. Can anyone recommend any easily-commutable secondaries with great ASD provision? The probably challenging behaviour aspect of it probably rules out independents I'm guessing. Would a nearby grammar school be suitable if he was able to pass his 11+ or would his meltdowns not go down too well? (we could get in on sibling priority)

And more in general - are one to ones generally a thing at secondary? It may well be that as it's probably very unlikely he will get the same TLC as he's been getting at primary at secondary due to different teachers etc, a one to one might be more useful.

With exactly the right environment I know he can succeed academically and do very well, but I'm genuinely worried we'll never be able to find it locally and I am at a loss for what to do.

Thank you! Flowers

I’ve heard good things about Egerton Rothesay. I know it’s private but might be worth a visit.
