Roughly speaking how much extra funding would a school recieve for a child with a ehcp for 25 hrs support of a level 3 BSL qualified CSW. .?

Thanks

Schools have to fund the first £6000 of what additional support needed, so, if that is what it states on the EHCP, then, the cost of hiring someone like (+ any other needs ??) less £6K.

bf1000 · 13/04/2018 23:15

So the cost of the person is covered minus 6k?

School are kicking off saying they will need to make a member of staff redundant to pay for child's specialist support.

Asking for a friend and just wanting to check how it works

If uk average of support pay varies do the pay depending on persons experience? Middle amount, Lowest or highest amount or the actual Figure?

Ie if school employees someone cheaper do they just get less money or keep the difference

Could you clarify what you mean by a CSW?

GnotherGnu · 14/04/2018 16:25

The Head seriously needs educating if he thinks that the school has to fund all the support. Even the first £6K comes from delegated SEN funding designed specifically to support children with learning difficulties.

Haveasay · 14/04/2018 17:02

Many schools do not have delegated funding at a level that would provide £6000 for every child with an EHCP or for pupils at SEN support, even though this is the expectation. The delegated funding is worked out according to a formula determined by the government.

Communication support worker, for a profoundly deaf child who only communication is BSL

So my next question would be, does the local authority have CSWs as part of a specialist service and if so is there an additional cost, or is access to them part of a commissioned service? Who recommended need for CSW? And is it a mainstream school or specialist school where these specialists are already employed?
If they are already in a specialist placement with CSWs as part of staff team I would expect that provision to be met within placement costs. If it is not a specialist provision the local authority will determine how much they are prepared to pay towards the cost.
Another possibility, if this is a new EHCP the current school should be consulted on whether they are able to meet need and if they do not have that specialist provision, they could say 'no'.

No CSW as far as I know in LA. Mainstreamed non specialist school. Have said they can meet child's needs. School named on EHCP

school not wanting to get qualified CSW and have now I'd will train one of the teaching assistants in school but this isn't suitable as child needing fluent communication and will take years for someone to tain to this level

Teacher of to deaf and guidelines state CSW needs to be at level 3

Child unable to access any verbal communication so without CSW won't be able to access any part um effectively

  • any part of the curriculum effectively

If the school have said they can meet need they are obliged to provide the support detailed. The local authority should fund the support required less approx£6000. However they are likely to cost it at a basic level and not necessarily the true full cost i.e. will not give more to reflect experience of the specialist.

bf1000 · 16/04/2018 09:58

Yes I think this is where the problem is. They will only pay for a standard teaching assistant and the specialist skills will expect a higher salary. It's a difference of between £3 to £8 a hour more that the specialist skills would earn, so likely won't have any applications with required skills applying.

Most LA will only find at TA cost rather than CSW cost. That’s where the problem comes I think. So to pay the extra needed the school says that they’ll have to find the money elsewhere. Which should be challenging the LA not the family.

Thank you everyone
