my child has been described as 'shutting down' if he receives feedback that relates to improving his work (not criticism, just encouragement eg - that was great, have you tried ....) I get the impression he just totally disengages and it can be quite some time before he is 'back' it is stopping him progress at school. The SENCO is involved but they seem to not know what to do with him.

Has anyone experienced this and have some suggestions of how to help him not 'switch off' if he receives a suggestion for improvement.

As some other background, He also has sensory issues so hates loud busy places, strange textures and can struggle with transitions (hiding under desks, in cupboards and can smash things up) but school don't seem worried about those problems particularly as they seem more familiar territory for them!

Maybe he just doesn't understand what they are saying to him? My son struggles with processing information especially if it very wordy and complex.

How old is your son?

He is 8 so hes been in school a while, I didn't get the impression is was an understanding thing, but it could be. I was a bit flummoxed as they asked me for ideas but he doesn't 'shut down' at home really.

Hi Grasspigeons
just wondering if there is any mileage in using a social story type approach - so that any suggestions become less personal for him?
