4yo assessed by SENco at school

Dear parents,

My 4yo is in reception at an independent London school. He is a summer baby so one of the youngest in the class. During the parents evening aiming to discuss the autumn term, his teacher expressed some concerns regarding his ability to concentrate and follow instructions. She also said he has trouble controlling his excitement when in a large group. She therefore wants him assessed by the school's SENco. She also recommended speech therapy for a lisp he has. I did notice my son's inability to follow some instructions and to pay attention to what is said to him, I try to work with him on that but I tend to blame that on his age.

He is a very happy child, and has lots of friends at school. He tends to be shy around adults but has no problems socialising with other children.

I'm from another country and although I do a lot of reading and asking around, I'm still discovering the education system in the UK. I therefore don't know what is considered "normal" and just needs a bit of support, and what is more serious.

I'll appreciate if other mums/dads who had similar issues can share their experience.

Also, I've been reading about occupational therapy. Can it help in his case?

Apologies for the very long thread.

Many thanks in advance!

I think you will find independent schools rather "rigourous" in their expectations of children.

4 is so young...it makes me irritated that 4 year olds are expected to control their excitement!

Is his speech good? Has he been ok socially?

At 4 those are all I care about.
