I am struggling to write about my sons needs for statement assessment! I feel very amateur, inhibited by the lack of any Dx, and guilty its taken so long to get this far!! Cant get through to Ipsea (have been trying for a week) or parent partnership! Have organised a private assessment (still 3 weeks away) and written to his paediatrician. I know Ds is not progressing at school, has adhd-like and as-like behaviours, has poor motor skills, delayed language poor memory, and would be better off in a small class (!) He needs support preferably constantly! (and pigs might fly!!) Is it enough just to write this? I have 4.5 weeks to write a report and expect little supporting information much before then. Where should I start? Anyone got any advise? Ds is 7, in year 2, and quite young for his age.

start doing the basics of your report now- highlighting the differences between your ds and his peers(as far as you are aware)
go into school and ask to see his teacher and his personal file and take the discussion further with issues that are raised.
Ask about his pivet scores and get the teacher/senco to explain them to you(if they are not done then why not?)
save your report on the pc and then wait until nearer the deadline of 12/4 and see if you have copies of any other reports and can enhance yours accordingly.

Thanks Chatee and Socci. Have reread the report I wrote for the statement application (to get them to consider to assess) so will build on that. I can reorganise it to fit in with the format suggested. Hopefully will get some pointers from the ED Psych next week. Have rather a poor relationship with school in that I feel my concerns are ignored, I think I am too polite when fobbed off! - I am learning to be more pushy and put things in writting ( though they never seem to write back!), and also realised frankly that schools are not good at coping with all types of sen! ( and that the LEA has very limited funds which it guards like a dragon!)
What are pivot scores are they the P levels (P4/P5)?

pivot scores are based on 17 small sections of learning :
Listening
Speaking
Reading
Writing
Applying Maths
Number
Shape and space
Scientific enquiry
Life processes
Materials
Physical
Finding things out
Developing ideas
Exchanging ideas
Working with others
Organisational skills
Attention

these are 'tested' each year and are used as a method of seeing how the child has progressed- they are part of the LEA requirements from school to provide for the annual review(or they are in our LEA)
From what i understand they are graded from P scales(which is below national curriculum levels) and then national curriculum levels, letters are also used to didvide the level of achievement-but i'm not 100% on how they are applied-really must ask!!
hope that helps you- can anyone else enlighten our knowledge about pivots???? tia

Hi magso, I've just sat down at the computer meaning to work on my parental statement for my DS's assessment, decided to MN for a bit instead, and came across your thread!

Couldn't walk away without telling you that the NAS have an Advocacy for Education Service (0845 070 4002), you leave a message on their answerphone and someone rings you back. Took only 2 days in my case, and the lady I spoke to was more than happy to read through my report.

Also, Socci, if you're still checking this thread, would you mind emailing me your report? Is it OK if I CAT you? (I'd be very interested, especially since you're getting funding for your ABA programme, if I remember correctly!)

Thankyou all! This is such a supportive site (MN).Due to speak to school later today so thanks Chatee for the info on pivot scores. And Homsa thanks for the contact number, I will contact NSA. Its helped to realise I can just say what I think he needs which in effect is fulltime support! (I know he wont get full time but he needs it so why not say it?)Thanks again
