Spoken to dd2s speech therapist today....

and she had seen very little improvement when she saw her 2 weeks ago (took this long to speak to her) from her previous appointment in June.
She has now arranged things to do in school and wants to see dd2 again after 1/2 term and wants me to meet with her then too. Considering the fact she has only felt the need for her to be seen once a term before this she must be worried.
I've been quite concerned myself but this has worried me more.

How old is your dd nikkie?
I think at school age they tend to be a lot more proactive as many early speech problems resolve spontaneously by age 5-6 perhaps?

TooTicky · 13/02/2007 12:43

Were you worried about your dd anyway or are you just worried because of what the speech therapist has said?
How old is your dd?

She is 5 1/2 .I sort of got my eyes open over Christmas to how much I 'translate' for her with people we don't see very often so had decided to push for more help through school.Last term I thought she had been seen in school and school thought she had been seen at clinic so she hadn't been seen since June.
She has a lot of language but it is very unclear , lots of sounds are missed particularly the ends of words.
School has asked for a hearing test (I have taken her for a few in the past but they are always ok) and feel the same as me that hearing is intermittant (sp?)Speech therapist said it sounds possible.

My ds2 is 5 and has been having speech therapy since he was 3. His speech is unclear but improving - he struggles particularly with the sounds at the beginning of words. He has been having 5 hours support with a teaching assistant each week. If your dd's speech therapist is concerned she may well instigate something similar, although it does seem to involve applying for funding. We also get exercises to work on at home. Good luck.

I am going into school next time she visits and hopefully can instigate something then. For the past 2 years she has had speech therapy once a term and her language has improved but is still sometimes a bit muddled .The main problem is clarity and tbh I don't know how much they can do until we get to the bottom of the problem.

Hi Nikkie.
It doesn't sound too worrying.
I would be pleased that the salt wants to push for some more intervention.
Most speech difficulties sort themselves out.

nikkie · 14/02/2007 23:14

Just wondered why it has took this long for them to be interested.

It's standard to review a child periodically (say every 6 months) and then either discharge, review again,or resume/start therapy.

If you want to be proactive, ask the salt for things to do at home with her.

nikkie · 14/02/2007 23:19

She has stuff to do at home just not making as much progress as expected I think
Think we need to get to the bottom of hearing problem (as most people think it is)

She still does 'I not know' 'he not tell me' type phrases, is this common at the age?
Dd1 was always very ahead verbally so not really got anyone to compare to.

moondog · 14/02/2007 23:22

Yes,that will give you a much more accurate picture of where things are.

Try not to worry.I know it's hard, but these sorts of issues are very common and generally pretty easy to resolve.

moondog · 14/02/2007 23:23

Well,it sounds now as if you are talking about her language skills.

Speech nad language are two separate (but related things)

Tbh, the salt is in a better position to advise than me.

nikkie · 14/02/2007 23:24

Thanks Moondog

Its both , mainly clarity but its phrase like those which seem to be immature (though I'm never sure if thats just compared to dd1 )
