Advice on SALT

My dd2(5) has speech probs, she seems to have majority of words/language(maybe not ofa 5 yo IYKWIM) but it is very unclear.I understand her 99% so does dd1 but over Xmas seeing family has made me realise how much I am actually translating for them.At her parents evening in Nov the class teacher said she is very pleased withher in class but admitted she doesn't always understand her. When I have been with her and she talks to the staff it is very obvious how little they do catch first time.Just before Xmas we had been telling her teacher about her swimming cert. and teacher said to bring it in to show everyone.Today dd1 & 2 were playing assembly and it turns out dd2 went to the front of assembly (shes not shy ) to tell everyone what she had done, and the deputy head ended up getting dd1 to talk with her (about her cert as well) as the DH couldn't understand DD2.

Another problem we seem to have now is she appears (to me/family anyway) quite bright and her speech seems to be holding her back(or will do) they have been grouping the class by ability and she is in a lower ability group (though I don't know how much difference this makes atm.

Anyway to get to my question for the past 3 years she has had SALT once a term (usually because I phoned up and nagged) and now is getting it through school but AFAIK only once so far.Should I push for more? Whats the best way to broach the subject with the teacher without sounding like I'm a pushy Mam(ie the bright bit)?

hiya nikkie,
just bite the bullet and ask what sort of iep is in place for your dd??
and depending on the answer either get one in place or request an educational psychologist appointment or request an assessment for a statement

(iirc you are the same county as me )so do it now and it might be in place for juniors if you are lucky.....

No IEP (another thing that bothers me ) she had one at playschool but so far they haven't mentioned anything.

Think she is prob very good at school, she loves rules and loves answering questions things like that and is prob very easy to have there.
Totally different 2 1/2 years ago.Sh e used to scream and head bang all the time, looking back that was when her hearing all went wrong and as it came back she got better(I also signed with her a lot). About 18 months ago she didn't speak more than 3-4 word sentances she didn't know colours and would shut down when there was a lot of noise.I suspected ASD at one point but a lot of the 'symptoms' have gone now.In the last 12 months everything has come on massivly (when she wants to)but her speech seems to be holding her back.

Think you are north of me chatee?

SmileysPeople · 05/01/2007 22:34

Nikkie, my DS2 has some speech problems too. Last Friday night I was on here late and came across a poster called Spiritualknot, who is a SALT. She was brilliant, and gave me some great advice. I hadn't come across her before, how about puttingout a thread for her attention? Someone may know her, she really was good.

nikkie · 06/01/2007 17:05

Yeah still C Chattee.

Will send a note with dd2 on MOn asking to meet with teachers(she has 2).

Hi yur post reminds me of DS2 (my non- sn child) who had glue ear which is now clearing. he is six soon, and I just wanted to reassure you that in the past few months his progress has been amazing, going from most not understood to most understood.

I would ask for a chat with the SENCO and suggest an IEP, especially as it is holding her back. I would also request regular SALT in a letter.

There are some relevant charities about- will have a look......

PeachyClair · 06/01/2007 17:10

Aphasic

PeachyClair · 06/01/2007 17:12

i can

also have a look at bibic if you want stuff foor home- last time I was there one of the children was just like yours

chatee · 06/01/2007 17:19

hate to say it then nikkie but the lea are a bunch of .....(insert your own opinion here or borrow mine if you have ever read any of my other threads about them!!)

iirc- don't you work with children with s/n?...so you must know a little about the lea from that? or am i totally wrong?

i wouldn't wait for the school to request a statutory assessment for a statement of special needs-after your chat with them and even if they do put her on an iep, by the time the lea come to look at her(and it will include an educational psychologist review-which can only be a plus as most of them i have met are quite good and certainly will help and chat to you off record as well as written reports}

good luck with your dealings with them-record everything!!

Like I said she h=did have an IEP at Playschool but as she had started to complete that by the time she started infants, ithought that they would let her settle in before they did anything (they are quite laid back IME at that school) but she has been there a term and think it needs pushing so want to be armed with anything useful when she goes back!

Her SALt used to be through me (and she didn't tend to cooperate so it was more observed and suggestions than anything active) and all I know that she did this term is that she went to the library with a lady and they talked about her holiday and the lady had orange hair so I went and asked and it was th speech therapist (same as we saw before but had had her hair cut -not orange!)

Chatee -Yes do work in a SN school so know the more severe side IYSWIM. DOn't know the parents sdie and also work with secondary (post 16 actually ) so don't know so much about the foundation stage either.
All the ed pschs that come to us have been cr*p too!

Don't think she would get a statement but she does need SALT regularly

Thanks Peachy, have looked at I-can before but will look at the others.

Been to see school this afternoon.Speech therapy is under a shake up .They are no longer going into school all the kids are being assessed then appointments wil be made for then to attend clinc.BUT dds speech therapist hasn't been in yet to assess her (there is 3 covering the school) .By coincidence when the teacher went to phone her the clinic informed her that the SALT will be visiting in 2 weeks! So they are going to speak to her about their concerns and I can speak to her at the clinic.

Also school have concerns about her hearing. She is loud (without being excited or even aware of it), she is sensitive to noise, and at times she doesn't appear to hear the questions.

They are pleased with her in the actual education side of things though

Hope things work out a bit better on the SALT front, nikkie. Please don't be afraid of being a pushy mum - you just have to do it, really, if your child isn't getting what they need.

nikkie · 16/01/2007 21:56

Will wait to see what she says and whether its worth going back to hosp for another hearing test (last one was August though )
